I personally label this type of patterns "fair isle", because of the different parts that appear in horizontal bands, and because of the interaction of colour. Depending on the neighbouring stitches and colours, the same yarn colour can appear very different in parts of the fabric, especially when seen from further away, from where these "fair isle" patterns have anyway the most interesting effects.
